This vocabulary combines all of the constituent keyword sets of the Global Change Master Directory (GCMD).

The Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Keywords are a hierarchical set of controlled Earth Science vocabularies that help ensure Earth science data and services are described in a consistent and comprehensive manner and allow for the precise searching of collection-level metadata and subsequent retrieval of data and services. The categories of GCMD Keywords are as follows.

  • Earth Science and Earth Science Services
  • Data Centers
  • Projects
  • Instruments/Sensors
  • Platforms/Sources
  • Locations
  • Horizontal Data Resolution
  • Vertical Data Resolution
  • Temporal Data Resolution
  • URL Content Types
  • Chronostratigraphic Units
  • Measurement Name
  • Granule Data Format

Please note: the above list contains the most common categories. Since version 9.1, there are additional categories which are not being republished in Research Vocabularies Australia. For more information, please see the GCMD Keywords documentation page.

The categories are also published individually; please see the related vocabularies.

Any person or organization may request an addition, modification or deletion to the keywords. A requester can be from the user community, a provider of metadata to GCMD, or any other GCMD stakeholder.

Further information is available in the Governance and community guide and at the GCMD Keywords Community Forum.

Generic information about the GCMD keywords follows:

The keywords help facilitate the classification and discovery of Earth Science data by providing a rich vocabulary for characterizing the data. The GCMD keywords are used by hundreds of data providers worldwide for categorizing the ~33,000 records stored in the Common Metadata Repository.

For more information about the keywords and how to access them, please visit the Keyword Landing Page. The GCMD User Support staff can be reached at gsfc-gcmduso@mail.nasa.gov. Questions can also be directed to Valerie Dixon at valerie.dixon@nasa.gov.
