definition Founded in 1961, the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) is the goverment agency responsible for shaping and implementing France's space policy in Europe. Its task is to invent the space system of the future, bring space technologies to maturity and guarantee France's independent access to space. The CNES supervises the following satellite oceanography missions: Topex/Poseidon, Jason-1, Jason-2 and AltiKa. It plays a supporting role in the Service Altimétrie et Localisation Précise (SALP) project and the AVISO data processing center. Finally, the CNES is a contributing organization to the Mercator Ocean project.
