definition The institute was established, in 1998, as a centre of excellence in applied marine research to support the development and sustainable management of Tasmania's living marine resources. It was a joint venture between the University of Tasmania and the Tasmanian Government, utilising the expertise and facilities of the Department of Primary Industries and Water. It became part of the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies in 2010.
