definition Generation of a copy of a data object that is referenced by the same name, but with a different replica number. When changes are made to the data object, the replica can be updated to track the changes. As part of replication, data may be given a PID for a repository. Enhanced metadata may be stored in a repository as part of replication. A PID should allow replicated objects from different communities to be identified as such.
