definition Distribution: This family consists of 611 genera and around 13000 described species throughout the world, with the highest diversity in humid lowland forests in the tropics. In Australia there is 60 genera (9 naturalised) and 343 species (34 naturalised) with several undescribed species.

Description: The species in this family are monoecious, dioecious or gynodioecious annual and perennial herbs, epiphytes, climbers, shrubs or trees, often with raphide crystals.
