notation R
definition These horizons consist of continuous masses (not boulders) of moderately strong to very strong rock (excluding pans) such as bedrock. R horizons may have cracks but these are few enough and/or fine enough that few roots penetrate and there is no significant displacement of rock. It is usually too strong to dig with hand tools, even when moist.
