definition Distribution: The Poaceae family is one of the largest and most cosmopolitan of the flowering plant families of the world, comprising more than 700 genera (c. 230 in Australia) and about 10 000 species (over 1300 in Australia). This family has twelve subfamilies and more than 40 tribes are recognised, of which ten subfamilies and 29 tribes (two informal) are represented in Australia.

Description: The species within this family are annual or perennial herbs or occasionally shrubs (giant herbs or bamboos), tufted or creeping, sometimes with stolons or rhizomes, usually terrestrial, rarely aquatic.

For more details regarding the description of species within this family please see: https://profiles.ala.org.au/opus/foa/profile/Poaceae

Pollen Morphology: The pollen produced by this family are spheroidal to oval in shape. The size of these grains are highly variable depending on species but are usually 20-50um along longest axis. These grains have a single pore that is round and surrounded by a thickened ring. The surface texture of these grains are smooth, however, the pollen appears markedly granular if the cell plasma remains inside.
