definition | Distribution: The family consists of about 218 genera with c. 6745 species, that have
a cosmopolitan distribution but chiefly in tropical and subtropical regions. In Australia
there are 58 genera and over 200 species. Description: This family consists of trees, shrubs, herbs or rarely climbers, that are monoecious or dioecious. The size of these pollen grains vary, however for inaperturate shaped grains they are around 50um in size. The apertures found on these grains are also variable with some being inapertrate, tricolpate or tricolporate. Inaperturate grain types have a gemmate surface texture while tricolpate and tricolporate types have variable surface textures. |
